Summer is nearing an end for us as school starts next week, so we are trying to take advantage of the little bit we have left before it’s back to some serious schedules and the hustle of getting everyone everywhere on time.  So an evening dip down at the harbor with these two to cool off during this little heat wave we are having was a perfect way to end our day.

Ringing in the last day of summer spent at the beach which happen to be almost empty because we are one of the last schools to start, which by the way I am not complaining about.  Now it’s back to schedules, running a tight ship on bedtime routines, packing lunches, and living half of my day in the car.  I am going to miss the unpredictability and ease that summer holds.  I’m usually more of a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl and too many schedules can sometimes overwhelm me a bit.

she turned eight and we did the usual birthday morning shenanigans.  waking up to a bedroom party door filled with balloons and streamers, favorite breakfast and presents.  then we packed up the trailer and headed for the beach for a couple days.  when some good friends bring your favorite drumsticks to finish the night off right nobody cares how dirty you are or how melted the ice-cream is, you just dive right in.

a weekend in the mountains

2016, family, Uncategorized, us

a trip up to the mountains for a long weekend proved to be a great time.  the kids are all on board with doing this as many times as we let them.  they had a blast snowboarding and skiing and after a long day on the slopes we drove up the road and found a perfect spot to push ourselves down some sketchy hills and sled to our hearts content.  after a couple very minor (and very funny to watch) injuries we made our way to town for some warm plates of spaghetti.

growing up

being on the freshman basketball team has proved to be a lot of fun.  this is the start of four years, that will go far too fast for my mama heart i am sure.  fifteen with one foot out the door, on his way to manhood and all that life has to offer.  i feel time and my first born slipping through my fingers, and it is hard, like really hard.  in one corner i am so excited to see what becomes of his world and in the other corner i want to freeze time and never let him go.  the letting go is hard.  it’s inevitable i know, and it’s all part of the journey, and it’s all starting now.  i feel like i have so much to teach, so much to prepare him for, but also learn to take a back seat at the right time because mistakes are necessary and can, at times, teach him more than my words.

she and i took a break from chaos that was reaking havoc on her mood, which was in turn killing my mood, to watch the sunset, and it pretty quickly turned into building a tiny hangout for bugs that was equipped with a empty snail shell sitting atop one of the sticks.  we both walked away with a calmer heart and head.

teaching our children to work through the anger and overwhelming feelings is a tough job, especially when their actions have us reacting in a way that is the total opposite of what we want to teach.  Thankfully we offer lots of grace to each other.

we started off our day at La Brea Tarpits checking out all the fossils and imagining what life would have been like all those years ago.  it is hard to imagine all those animals roaming around what is now our fast paced city jam packed with tons of people.  then we made our way over to the farmers market for some lunch before heading home.
