A quick picnic next to the stables up the road, followed by finding the best climbing tree and well, climbing it over and over. Then there were some contests that involved jumping off the table to see who could jump the farthest and who could touch the trees leaves.

It was getting close to sunset so I grabbed these two and we set out for one of the highest hills in the neighborhood.  It’s not always easy with the schedules of four kids, but being intentional about slowing down and getting outside with no real plan keeps us grounded and honestly keeps my head on straight.  They may have gotten three thorns stuck in some toes but it was quickly forgotten about when determination set in to collect the perfect sticks to build a stick teepee and an ant bridge, all while the sun crept lower and lower in the sky.  We sat and watched the sun dip below the hills in the distance and then headed back down the hill.  All and all I’d chalk it up to an okay Friday evening.

Ringing in the last day of summer spent at the beach which happen to be almost empty because we are one of the last schools to start, which by the way I am not complaining about.  Now it’s back to schedules, running a tight ship on bedtime routines, packing lunches, and living half of my day in the car.  I am going to miss the unpredictability and ease that summer holds.  I’m usually more of a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl and too many schedules can sometimes overwhelm me a bit.

We dug up some left over fourth of July sparklers one evening before bed and the kids were pretty thrilled to say the least.  We were all a little surprised with Jax and how he didn’t hesitate for a second about holding his own sparkler, actually he insisted that he hold it alone.

becasue this is the time of the year where we would rather spend the majority of our time in the water and sometimes finishing the day at the beach is just what we need.  its that time of year where we get to sleep in, eat dinner way too late somedays, and hopfully jump in the shower to rinse off the days dirt and sand, and then fight to keep our eyes open long enough to brush at least a couple teeth before crawling into bed.

she turned eight and we did the usual birthday morning shenanigans.  waking up to a bedroom party door filled with balloons and streamers, favorite breakfast and presents.  then we packed up the trailer and headed for the beach for a couple days.  when some good friends bring your favorite drumsticks to finish the night off right nobody cares how dirty you are or how melted the ice-cream is, you just dive right in.

his best friend is moving across the globe in less than a month.  we have been soaking up all the time we have left because this boy of mine is going to be crushed when he can’t run across the street while yelling his friends name at the top of his lungs.  all the neighbors know remy is coming before there is ever a knock at the door.  nevermind the age difference of more than a couple years, these two are the truest kind of friends and they always have each others back.  they even have a secret handshake.  i am dreading the day we have to say good-bye.

we planned a little getaway at the beach for spring break.  when we planned it, we were thinking blue skies and warm sunny days but what we got was rain.  the kids couldn’t have cared less but the continuous muddy bodies and feet wandering through the trailer were something i could have done without.  but honestly, i think the muddy campsite made them quite happy.  and the rain was really more of a sprinkle.  the one time it did rain pretty hard was in the middle of the night.  it was so loud as it was hitting the top of the trailer that it woke me.  but who am i to complain about listening to rain and waves crashing all in the same night…. they really are two of my favorite things to listen to while laying in bed.

it felt like a start to summer vacations, which by this time of year i am ready for.  the kids are counting down the days to the last day of school and so am i.  i am anxiously waiting to throw in the towel to early morning alarms, making lunches, and hurrying everyone out the door to beat the school bell.

around the block with only half the neighborhood kids.

i am so grateful for what we have in this neighborhood.  i swear, it’s just like it used to be, in the “old days” as they say.  i am always hearing people talk about how they wish it was the way it used to be.  and as i am listening to them describe their childhood of running around the neighborhood with all their friends like a small gang, going from house to house, grabbing snacks along the way and staying out until the sun went down, i stop and think, that is exactly what my kids have. when school lets out and homework is done, and all weekend long, the streets are echoing screams of laughter and chaos. they help break up fights between each other and make up more times than i can count on my two hands. but at the end of the day as they make their way back to their own homes they are all best friends again with a heart full of memories that will last a lifetime.
